Cloud Technology Basics

Presented by: USMG President Scott Knauss

Join us as we explore the dynamic world of cloud computing, designed to simplify complex technology concepts into practical knowledge.

  • IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and FaaS: Discover the different types of cloud services—from renting virtual computing resources (IaaS) to using online software applications (SaaS). We'll touch on how each model supports your daily tech needs and examples of leading providers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
  • Shared Responsibility Models: Understand how cloud security and management responsibilities are shared between providers and users, ensuring efficient and safe cloud operations.
  • DevSecOps: We'll briefly discuss integrating security within the DevOps process to accelerate and secure software deployment.
  • Containers and Kubernetes: Learn the basics of containers, how they differ from traditional virtual machines, and how Kubernetes helps manage them at scale.

This training will give you a clear overview of how cloud services can enhance operational efficiency and flexibility. Perfect for those looking to get a quick grasp of essential cloud concepts!

About our speakers:

Born and raised in Virginia, Scott spent 8 years in the US Navy as a submariner. He specialized in nuclear power and later moved into information technologies and networking. After his enlistment, Scott contracted for the Navy for more than 17 years working as a system administrator, network engineer, lead NOC engineer and red team security analyst. Providing Internet services and protecting the fleet from cyberattacks was a major part of Scott’s early career. He then spent 6 years in the commercial sector working for Red Hat as a Cloud Architect and Cloud Success Architect. More recently, Scott oversaw the design and implementation of a Zero Trust based multi-tenant international network to support the US Army Europe’s coalition operations as the Cybersecurity Architect. Today, Scott is the Cloud Engineer and Cybersecurity Architect for USAREUR-AF’s newly minted Cloud Managment Office (CMO) and the president of the local ISC2 Chapter.
